Archifest Pavilion

Singapore

2020

A series of defined spaces are created to accommodate the programme of Archifest 2020 at the 1st Storey of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Centre at Maxwell Road, set apart from the other exhibitions, commercial activity and pedestrian movement in and around the atrium.

Meeting Point

At the existing Drop-Off area - 1.3 m H screens demarcate seating areas where participants going for Architours can await the transportation coaches taking them for the tours.  The screens between the seating areas can be moved away to create larger spaces for small group interaction activities involving up to 10 persons.  The perimeter screens would provide surfaces for event branding visible from Maxwell Road.

Exhibition Space

Three square exhibition rooms for the selected Archifest projects are formed around the existing water feature and planters at the centre of the Atrium.  The Information Counter is located in one of these rooms.  Canopies built from Light Emitting Surface (LES) glass around the perimeter of each room have a striped pattern that gives off ambient light at night, and provides shading during the day.

Function Area

The stage and surface for audio-visual projection are located at the far side of the atrium, at one of the single-height wing areas.  Panels between the seating areas act as protective shields to allow for greater audience density, doubling also as additional surfaces for exhibition panels if required.   Moving the panels to the perimeter will allow for the creation of another space for small group interaction.

Visual Axis

The three sets of spaces (Meeting Point, Exhibition Rooms and Function Area) are linked visually via an axial corridor along which images of the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) Design Award winning projects are displayed.

Materials

The external walls of the three areas would consist of two layers of LES glass.  The outer glass layer would have the LES print in vertical stripes, backlighting the Archifest branding graphics printed on clear vinyl stickers.  The inner glass layer would have the LES print form a continuous lighted surface behind exhibition graphics, the exhibition graphics also being printed on clear vinyl stickers.  As all graphics are removable, the LES glass wall panels can be reused for future events.  Fixtures like the information counter and model stands could also be made from LES or other types of glass.
