Site
This house has been designed for a challenging site that slopes down by 6.36 m from the road entry and is affected along two of its boundaries by sewers and drainage reserves. The elevation of the site however does allow one to look out over the landscaped recreational grounds of an adjacent condominium.
Brief
The clients are a couple whose three children are currently based overseas. This project replaces an existing house on the site from 2001 with a new building that allows the couple to better enjoy their property in their current stage of life.
Massing
The parti of the house was thus designed in the following manner:
(1) A basement “plinth” clad in black granite accommodating three bedrooms for the children, a Family Room and service areas. Although this floor is technically a basement, the main spaces at this floor nevertheless have full-height openings to the Swimming Pool and Terraces located at the lower part of the site.
(2) A vertical circulation core clad in Grey Granite.
(3) One-storey and two-storey high “boxes” clad in beige limestone hover over the plinth where the owners’ spaces (Master Bedroom, Master Lounge, Study Rooms, Master Wardrobes and Master Bath) are located. The privacy of these spaces are moderated by operable timber louvres.
(4) The public areas of the house including a double-height Living Room are situated at the interstitial spaces between the enclosed volumes of the private zones.
(5) Added to the composition are a pavilion at the 3rd Storey housing recreational facilities (Gym and Barbeque Area) and landscaped balconies and terraces for the couple’s pet dogs.
